I am all about natural ways to knock out depression and anxiety! Being a depressed personality at times myself, I have been doing some research and found something a little “shocking”…..a nice and relaxing COLD shower! According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “Exposure to cold is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase the blood level of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline and to increase synaptic release of noradrenaline in the brain as well. Additionally, due to the high density of cold receptors in the skin, a cold shower is expected to send an overwhelming amount of electrical impulses from peripheral nerve endings to the brain, which could result in an anti-depressive effect.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17993252
Cold showers also help to ward off fat, increasing the energy it takes to try to warm your body up and burning fat in the process. In doing so, your metabolism receives a beneficial spike as well!
Cold showers help with stress by putting your body under stress. It pretty much builds up endurance for your immune system. Other great benefits include better sleep, reducing inflammations and body aches and much, much, more…so much that it is worth a little research on your part. Here is a great article about the wonderful benefits of taking a cold shower and some of the not so great benefits of a hot shower: http://betterbodyguide.com/the-extraordinary-benefits-of-cold-showers/
As for a little bit of advice, I would start slow. I would start off with a warm shower and gradually end with a cold shower so that your body does not go into shock right away. Try to stand in the cold water for a couple minutes the first time, then five, then for the whole shower (all at your own pace of course). Happy showering!
