'Health Anxiety' (Hypochondriasis) Reassurance - HA Sufferers ONLY
Group Options
Health Anxiety refers to a persistent worry about having a serious illness. This debilitating condition is the result of an inaccurate perception of the body’s condition despite the absence of an actual medical condition.
If you spend every waking hour prodding and poking your body, looking for lumps and bumps, and convince yourself on a daily basis you have cancer, or MS, or you are having a stroke, without a reasonable cause for doing so... if you go to bed at night hoping you don't stop breathing in your sleep, or think that the fact your eyebrow itches means you have a brain tumour... then its likely you suffer from Health Anxiety, or Hypochondriasis, as it used to be called in the medical proffession.
Hypochondriasis/Health Anxiety is not about 'faking' illness. That is a misconception.
Many Health Anxiety Sufferers find it hard to get the support they feel they need from friends, family or medical professionals, and as a result feel they suffer the condition entirely alone. Some are even mocked or cause anger in those close to them, because they do not understand the nature of Hypochondriasis.
This group is a place where you can stop being apologetic about your disorder. You can meet like-minded individuals and share your experiences, tips and advice without the scrutiny of those who presume Hypochondria is all about attention seeking.
For those of you who suffer severe Health Anxiety that has made day-to-day living almost unbearable, please consider becoming a member of 'High Anxiety - The Health Anxiety Reassurance Network'.
High Anxiety is run by myself and contains a wealth of information about the disorder. The site opened in February 2012.

Hello everyone,
my name is Naomi and I have just set up a Group especially for people who post on here that suffer from Health Anxiety.
By Health Anxiety, I do not mean people who are anxious over diagnosed health conditions. 'Health Anxiety' or Hypochondriasis relates soley to people who have irrational fears about their health or minor symptoms and blow them completely out of proportion and end up having Panic Attacks.
For example, people who inspect their skin routinely in case they have a rash, or people who get a fast heartbeat and presume they have a heart defect. People who see a bruise on their leg and presume they have a blood clot, or maybe get a cold and presume they have Pneumonia.
These people characteristically have loads of doctors appointments over many many minor ailements, and have usually had a traumatic experience in their past that relates to their fears, such as bereavement or withnessing an accident, or knowing someone who was in a medical emergency etc.
Some people will worry about their health because of illnesses they had in the past and now try to prevent them coming back by compulsively obsessing over their health... while others can panic irrationally over their health when they reach the same age as a parent or sibling that died.
These are the people the group is for.
If we all join together and share our thoughts, we may be able to make progress with overcoming the disorder.
If you believe you are a Health Anxiety/Hypochondria Sufferer, make the first big step, by accepting its presence in your life, and joining the group.
Naomi x
