What helps tame anxiety?
For the last few years, I have felt fine until mid-day when anxiety sudden;y intrudes on my life. Meds help, but I would like to get off them. I can not believe how this anxiety impacts my life so negatively. If I have a choice, I don't make plans at night. I see a therapist, exercise, and listen to meditation CD's at bedtime, but I am not making much progress. Deep breathing does not seem to alleviate the feeling, which I find hard to describe. In the past, my symptoms have not fit the usual anxiety or panic attack profile. However, lately nausea has been an issue. Dramamine seems to help alleviate that. It is hard work to make it through a whole day feeling normal!
I know what you mean, I usually feel like that in the morning especially when I have to leave the house to go somewhere. I too have not found deep breathing or visualisation useful when in those situations, they may work but only ever briefly with me. What I have found best to stop my anxiety in the mornings and may too work for you at midday, is keeping your mind occupied so you're not focussing on feeling anxious. Reading a book or doing a crossword are good ways to occupy yourself. I've been reading the complete Sherlock Holmes, and boy does that take my mind off of anxiety. Taking a slow walk in the garden or even a park and getting some air in your lungs without having to work out is also a great way to calm yourself, it gives you some time to think and relax. I always feel so much better after a good walk. Give some of those things a try, they could work for you too. :)
Along the lines of the above answer, I found keeping busy was good. Also, I found reading about anxiety on Psychology Today helped a lot too. When I would be especially low-functioning because of my symptoms I would look at different articles on the site and read about methods to deal with it. It kept my mind busy so I wasn't dwelling on other things and made me feel a little more in control whenever I found a useful article.
